Historical background

Cosoleto

Located on the northern foothills of the Aspromonte massif, Cosoleto offers visitors a picturesque setting, surrounded by olive groves, dominating the vast plain of Gioia Tauro. The town consists of a central nucleus, rebuilt after the earthquake on February 5, 1783 and two smaller villages of Sitizano and Acquaro.

History

The Taccone family

The Taccone family, Marquises of Sitizano, has played a key role in the history of Sitizano and their presence dates back many centuries. Of Lombard origin, the family has been associated with noble families since the 14th century when they moved to the Kingdom of Naples, first in Sicily and later in 1487 in Calabria with Paolo Taccone. In 1578, Nicola Taccone was called by the nobility of Tropea to be part of the seat of Pontercole. They were treasurers of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies first Nicola in 1735 and subsequently Francesco in 1757. In the 18th century, the Taccone family had settled in Naples. On August 12, 1797, Nicola Taccone received the title of Marquis of Sitizano. In fact, the town of Sitizano was in the fiefdom of Santa Cristina first owned by the Counts Ruffo di Sinopoli, which was then sold to the Spinelli family. Finally, in 1648 the fiefdom was purchased with the title of barony by the Taccone family for 14,000 ducats. In Sitizano, the residence of the Taccone Marquises, is a manor surrounded by beautiful gardens full of plants that dominates the entire village, and where the heirs of the noble family return every year, renewing their very close ties with this territory. Evidence of this bond also comes from the inauguration of the Carriage Museum, made possible thanks to the donation of eight carriages of Italian and French fabrication, belonging to the family, including the premises that house the museum itself.
